Hot Valley - James Lear

Ladymol's Review

James Lear is one of my favourite authors. He can pull off that neat trick of superb historical writing with graphic and unrelenting hot sex. Perfect. So, I'm gutted that I haven't even finished this one. It has all the ingredients of his others - strong historical context (American Civil War) and men. Where does it go wrong then? Well, I didn't like the main character for a start. He was completely over the top, even for a fictional porn character. He has sex with everyone and everything that moves. And the sex is repetitious - quite unlike Lear's other novels where it's imaginative and new every time, fulfilling every kink. The secondary character did nothing for me either - noble savage, educated slave - he was just unconvincing (and pretty boring). There were some great scenes - a medical examination springs to mind which was incredibly hot - but most of the sex blurs and I can't really remember one character from the other. If you want a great James Lear try The Palace of Varieties. This one just didn't do it for me.
